Belacolina was originally built by a returning philanthropist as a place of rest and recovery for the local community. Its history as a spiritual retreat had always been about stepping away from everyday life to find peace, reflection and renewal.
The opportunity was to carry that purpose forward for a contemporary audience, framing retreat not as solitary escape, but as shared space for presence, care and connection.

The building contains handmade tiles carrying poems by local writers about joy, peace and tranquillity.
Created by local artisans, their tall and characterful lettering became a tangible connection between the building’s architecture, spiritual history and relationship with the surrounding community.
Rather than impose a new visual language, the identity could be uncovered from something already held within the place.
